Stylist Essentials

As a stylist, or just in the fashion industry period, you need to always be prepared for fashion and beauty emergencies whether you are on a TV shoot, a fitting, or dressing a client for a major event.
Make sure to always have these items with you. You WILL need them.
I found a great little mini emergency kit at Francesca's that is perfect for beginners, and also just to have in your purse when your off-duty. It comes with these mini essentials:
Lip balm, floss, mints, nail file, clear nail polish, nail polish remover, hair spray, elastics, earring backs, stain remover, double sided tape, mini mending kit, deodorant, towelettes, band-aid, tampon, and pain reliever. Yes, all of these things fit in this tiny package that fits in my hand.

As mentioned, this is great to have in your purse as your own little emergency box; however, on the job, there will more than likely be more than one model and you always want to have backups so your not running to the store all the time for an emergency.
For a larger bag of emergency goodies I would include everything above, and of course some of those things can be brought to normal size instead of mini size. The following is also recommended :
-*MUST HAVE* a handheld steamer- you will always need this no matter what you are doing. I was caught steaming a bathing suit the other day for a TV appearance, so you never know what will have a few wrinkles that you need to get out.
-Sticky lint roller. I have a large one of these that I use before I leave the house, and I always keep a mini one in my purse. Usually, they come as a pack with a big and little one.
-Pins and safety pins. Always have different sizes for various occasions. You will most likely always have some last minute adjustments.
-Laundry sheets. You know those things you put in the dryer to make your clothes smell good? Yeah, they are fantastic for taming static, especially on your hair.
-Bobby pins. You can not go without these. They will always be needed for last minute fixes, or that time the hair stylists runs out of them.
-Superglue. For real. I was helping with a TV appearance about a week ago and an earring that we had borrowed from a local accessories boutique broke. The jewel had fallen out. It was the easiest fix.....if we had superglue. So, now I make sure I always have it because you never want to return something you borrowed, broken.
-A small pair of scissors. There is nothing I can think of that for any reason you would need a large pair of scissors, because you will mostly be cutting small strings, tags, etc.
-Nipple concealers. It's seams as if the fashion industry, especially the runways are all to familiar with the occasional peek-a-boo, and it just seems easier to save the poor models the embarrassment by preventing it with these.
-Nude underwear. Always have a few pairs of these, preferably in a thong style. Many times models can forget to wear these type of underwear so if they are on tv or a photo shoot, it doesn't show through the clothing.
-Lotion. When dealing with more revealing clothing or swimwear, the models skin needs to be ash free. Make sure it is fragrance and dye free, so it does not ruin the clothing. It also helps to make sure it is not greasy or oily so it does not soil the clothing.
-A few items of makeup. This can be your choice, you never know when you need that extra oomph of mascara (make sure to have disposable brushes) or eyeliner to tough things up.
-Makeup remover. Both in the pre-moistened wipes and the liquid. The wipes are great for all over, and the liquid is great for touch-ups.
-Q-tips. These work for everything from applying makeup, to taking it off and to help clean up nail polish and more!
-Keep a high fashion magazine or two in your bag as well. Models can get nervous sometimes, or if they are newer to the business they maybe uncomfortable and being able to look at successful models in a major magazine, can help ease their nerves by imitating some of the poses in the magazines, and give them a boost of confidence.
All of these are absolutely a must have and you will be a life-saver to many if you are prepared. Don't forget everything in your mini kit, and be sure to normal size everything and by in multiples.
This is a great way to start, and along the way you will add more supplies, as you find you need them, and don't forget to periodically check on your stash and make sure it is up to date, and if you run out of something, it was obviously needed so go get more!

What else do you put in your emergency bag?

Double Duty DIY

Today's post is a little DIY inspiration, and absolutely anyone can do it. It is also really great as a little craft project for little girls! You only need three things and your all set to make your own belt, that also doubles as a necklace!
First, start with 4 yards of rope. You can choose any style you want. I found this one at JoAnn fabrics, but there are so many to choose from!

Next, your going to need some tassels, and super glue.

Next step is to untwist the bottoms of each ends of the rope. Untwist about as long as the string at the top of the tassels. Place the string on the tassels in between them and twist the rope back together also twisting the string into them. Hold in place and use the super glue to mend them together and also in between the two rope pieces. And, anywhere you feel needs a little extra hold!

Wrap the finished product around your neck as many times as you want for your desired look as a layered necklace.

Same thing goes for the belt. I got it to wrap around me four times and then tied it in a bow (you can also just knot it without a bow) and let the tassels hang.

Viola!

Again, you can choose any type of rope, and you can also switch up what you put on the ends, like jewels. Be creative!

Vintage Valentine

Today's inspiration obviously comes from the fact that Valentines day is fast approaching, and with everyone rushing to buy gifts and flowers and what not, take a little time for yourself and think about sprucing yourself up with a cute little outfit you can wear on that special day, whether you have a significant other or not.  Yes, I have one of those, but I think of this day as more of an opportunity to just look extra cute instead of focusing on getting roses or going out to dinner. Since when do roses make you look pretty anyway? Maybe they add a little flair to your table for a week but thats it.

This first picture above is a little vintage inspiration with a few pieces I have put together.  The heart print dress is from ASOS and I just put an adorable little lace skirt from Forever21 over the bottom skirt of the dress to add something a little different, added a gold belt from GAP to bring it all together and voila!

Play around with your outfits, just because the stereotypical colors of Valentines day are pink and red, that does not limit you to wearing just those colors.  I just chose this dress because I thought it was extra cute and I am obsessed with hearts.  Just as long as you feel good in what you are wearing, do it! No matter the color.

Here is a basic purple bandage skirt and I put it together with two different shirts to create some color blocking:

The first picture and the one on the top right is a sheer loose top with small vertical lines made with studs.  I have one grey tights with both outfits and the bottom right picture is a silky fuschia top, that looks a little more business-like.  These are also great outfits for a Valentines day look, or just for whenever.  I love the color blocking.  With color blocking, you cant be shy. Grab two or three bright, bold colors and put them together, there are no rules as to which colors can go with what.  I just did this with a purple skirt, but you can pair pink colored tops with many other colored skirts as well.

Has anyone tried the color-blocking look? Send me your pictures, and you will be featured on this blog!

Many of my everyday outfits are posted on POSE.  If you are at all into fashion, this is an addictive must have.  Follow me @stylorexia

What I Bought From Missoni for Target, AND What I Plan on Still Buying.

Well, seems as if, I have underestimated how busy the Target stores would be in Lexington for Missoni. I went around 5 in the evening and while they were not busy with people shopping, they were pretty much sold out of EVERYTHING. I was quite upset. I purchased three items, and only one of those items I purchased was on my original list. boo. So, this is what I got:

Missoni for Target® V-Neck Combo Chiffon Sweater - Multicolor Print
Chiffon and Knit Sweater

Women's MISSONI for Target® Zig Zag Pattern Flats - Multicolor
These Awesome Flats.

Missoni for Target® Zig Zag Knee High Socks - OS - Blue/Purple

And a pair of purple and black zig-zag knee-high socks.

NOW. What I WANTED:

The flats- check!
Missoni for Target® Women's Shoulder Bag - Passione
This tote- I am tired of breaking down my Brahmin purse to carry around my books in at school, I need this.

Missoni for Target® V-Neck Cardigan - Multicolor Zigzag Print
This sweater- I can't get over the fact that I don't have this cardigan in my closet right now.

Missoni for Target® Printed Tee - Black/White Zigzag Print
This Tee- Super cute.

Missoni for Target® Space-Dye Knit Cardigan - Gold Zigzag Print
This sweater- sigh.

I think I am more angry about the stupid ebay shoppers who came and just grabbed armfuls of whatever they wanted and are now selling it on ebay for regular Missoni prices. I can be understanding that you need to make money, But I mean come on, leave something for everyone else, and triple the price, really? I'm gonna be mean, and say I hope no one buys it from you. and yes that makes me feel better.
They are restocking their supply tomorrow, so I will hope to venture over there after work to see if there is anything still left, and you better watch out, cause yes, I will push you over.

Missoni for Target

Today, Target opened its doors and website for fashion feens ready to purchase the fabulous creations by Missoni. In my opinion, this is Target's best designer collaboration thus far. So, since I am in class and can't be at fashion week, I am more excited about this since Target is just right down the road.

The family at Missoni designed an entire new collection for Target unlike any collection they have done in the past and it's affordable for people in college like me :) Of course, they still have the signature zig zag pattern and bright colors. They also have a home line as well, totaling a 400 piece collection with clothes and everything. When I saw some of the pieces for the home collection I so wished that I had my own home to decorate with all the Missoni goodies.

As I was trying to collect some pictures of this collection from target.com it seems as if, Missoni for Target has single handedly shut down their server. The website was so busy, that it literally couldn't handle anymore and shut down. (glad I didn't wake up early this morning to shop online) Even though this is unfortunate, if I were part of the Missoni family, a part of me would be jumping for joy knowing that my brand is that popular.
Hopefully soon, the site will be back up and running, but in the meantime I am going to a Target store to shop Missoni and I will post pictures later of all my goodies!

Fashion Week

I would do ANYTHING right now, for someone to quickly invent teleporting and be able to teleport me to fashion week. Being a poor college student is no bueno. HOWEVER, my lovely friend, Lauren found a great way to be able to follow everything thats going on (minus seeing the beutiful garments right before your eyes) online.

http://mashable.com/2011/09/05/how-to-follow-new-york-fashion-wee

This is a quick link that gives the main people to follow and the main happenings of what is going on during fashion week. Mashables is a great website that combines everything that is going on and leaves open for discussion and comments. Pretty much everything you need to know about following fashion week online, is on this link by Lauren Indvik.

If you love everything Fashion, and you are as upset as I am about not being there, then get in on this! Also, you need to have a twitter, if you dont, then your crazy. Even if you don't do the whole "hey friend, follow me and ill follow you back thing" like me, you should still have one for this. Honestly, I just follow for the fashion; with as much information that is put out there on twitter and with twitter-only giveaways, its worth it. So overcome your resistence to social media technology and just get over it and get in on all the great information that is awaiting!

I know I commented on the website, but don't forget that my favorite, Betsey Johnson is live streaming her show on Sept. 12 at 6:00pm on her website, http://www.betseyjohnson.com/home/index.jsp and on her facebook, http://www.facebook.com/#!/xobetseyjohnson  I watched this last time she did it and it was a lot of fun getting to see everything backstage before the show starts.

I will also be retweeting many of the exciting events and the main happenings of fashion week as well as what I like so far and what I don't like, so you can follow me too and tweet me any questions you might have :)

Fashion-Related Pet Peeves: Campus Editions

I am absolutely amazed at the things people will wear to class on a college campus. Maybe it's just because I'm clothing minded and I can't help but look at and analyze some peoples outfits, but I mean come on... Did you look in the mirror this morning?

One of my biggest annoyances is when your bra straps are showing. I always happen to sit behind girls who always seem to have that malfunction. Clean it up girls! If your wearing a strapless, racerback, or any other type of top where you should be concealing those straps, do it! Wear a strapless bra. A little endowed? Get a bra strap clip, I have tons and they work wonders. It just looks a little sloppy when they are hanging out for everyone to see, there is a reason they are called UNDERgarments.

Next, who wears pajamas to class? And I am not just talking about sweatpants and a t-shirt, I am talking about cartoon plastered pajamas. Really? I realize that many times you wake up late for class or you want to sleep in, but look halfway presentable. When you do that you look like you don't care; not just about yourself, but about anything. First impressions say a lot about someone and you can never get that back. Throw on some jeans super fast, and a nice top. Or better yet, lay out your clothes the night before so when you are running late you at least have something better than your spongebob pajamas because I will take a picture of you.

Last pet peeve of the day. High heels. Super cute, not for campus. You can barely walk after 5 minutes. I have yet to see a girl walk all around campus in high heels and not look like their knees are about to collapse under them because they hurt so bad. I have a lot of heels, wedges, platforms, pumps, etc., but I would never dream of wearing them around all day on campus walking up and down hills and to the other side and back. Yes, you will turn heads, but it will be the "wow, she looks uncomfortable, and dumb" head turn. Save them for the club, dinner with girls, or if you wear them to work, but save us the laughter and don't bring them to campus.

Thanks for reading my rants today, hopefully someone gained an inch or two of common sense :)

Wardrobe Essentials: What everyone should have in their closet.

**Sorry, I had to take the picture down because for some reason they wouldn't show up, But hopefull everyone gets the point :) email me with any questions**

Season after season, trend after trend, there is nothing better than having those basic, timeless essentials you can go back to and wear as is, or spruce them up!
There is always a variation on what everyone thinks should be in everyone’s wardrobe but we will discuss the top 5 that are pretty universal and universally, you need to have.

LITTLE BLACK DRESS AND THE BLACK TUX
First, lets start with that little black dress for the ladies and the black tux or suit for men.  These are so basic and timeless and there is no reason you shouldn’t have them.  Ladies, no matter the budget, you can always find a great little black dress that will look great on you and that you can go back to time after time.  There are so many different styles and silhouettes of the black dress your options are endless.  Make sure that the dress is great quality; finding a dress for 20 bucks is great, but sometimes you have to wonder, why is it 20 bucks? So, always make sure it is a great dress that will last you a long time. Fellas, a tux or suit might be a little more expensive than that little black dress, but every once in a while you can find a great steal.  This is important to have especially if you attend many business parties or dinners and don’t have the time to shop or don’t like to shop.  Oh, and one more thing, make best friends with a tailor. They will be able to make that suit off the rack look like the designer made it just for you.

 WHITE SHIRTS
Next on the list for men and women is a white shirt; both a t-shirt and a dress shirt.  A crisp white dress shirt goes with anything from a skirt to jeans, to dress pants and shorts.  It is a great basic to have and always easy to throw on if you are in a hurry and need to look your best.  Now, a t-shirt, yes a plain cotton or polyester t-shirt for men and women is needed.  This is something great to act as a creative base to your wardrobe.  You can throw a blazer or sweater over it, or for the ladies you can wear it alone and pile tons of chunky necklaces on.  These are definitely two essentials to have to look effortlessly stylish.

                                                                    BLAZERS

A blazer is the next essential that should be in your wardrobe.  For men and women you can wear and blazer with anything these days: dress pants, shorts, jeans, skirts, and dresses.  Black is a basic color that goes with everything, so I recommend that as well as another neutral such as beige or grey to switch it up a bit. Also, why not add a little color? I have a great neon pink and orange blazer that I pair with my denim all the time.  It something different and you will stand out and be sure to keep the compliments rolling in.

                                                                   DRESS PANT
Dress pants are something you can wear from the office to a night out and even to church on Sunday.  Black is a must have because again, they go with everything, but I also recommend another color of your choice whether it be brown or white, navy or cream, they all will match something in your wardrobe and always look timeless.

 LONG COATS
Last, but not least, a long coat. For men and women both this is something that will always look fabulous over whatever you have on.  And some people will only see the outer part anyway, so if your style is not so much up to par one day, throw that on, tie it up and your already looking fabulous!

Also, one last tip for always looking fabulous and thrown together in a hurry in a pair of great sunglasses.  For men, I love the Ray Ban style or aviators.  For women, anything that flatters your face shape is great the bigger you can handle the better!

Savvy Reincarnation

Summer so far in Kentucky has been HOT HOT HOT and HUMID! So, when the humidity is present it is nice to find something to occupy my time creatively. So my current projects are reviving an old dress, an old pair of booties and a few shirts! As I complete I'll post pictures today I completed my dress.

The dress started as a plain fuschia dress and I added feather detail and jewels around the neckline as well as a jeweled ribbon belt that I tacked on in a few places.
I can't wait to put my hair up in a bun put on some black patent pumps and go out for a night on the town with this great reincarnated dress.  AND there's so many jewels I don't even have to worry about jewelry. :)
This was one of the most exciting and fun projects that I have done and I am so excited to created some more goodies for myself and post them on here to get everyone's opinion!
Feel free to leave comments good or bad.
